What donations are tax-deductible when donating to St. Jude

Generally speaking, individuals can claim cash donations and other monetary donations as regular tax deductions up to the current year’s limitations. That said, there are several ways you can make a tax-deductible donation to support St. Jude. Consider:

For noncash donations, assets are assessed for tax deductions based on the fair market value of the property. When donating to St. Jude, this applies to cryptocurrency, stock donations, vehicle donations, real estate donations and more. Although individuals cannot claim volunteer hours on tax returns, you may consider claiming related expenses such as mileage, parking, tolls and other out-of-pocket expenses.

To estimate the tax deduction you may receive for a donation of cash or other appreciated assets, consider using a charitable donations tax-deduction calculator.

How much of my donation is tax-deductible?

A donation’s tax deductibility depends on a variety of factors including the country you are a citizen of, the type of donation you’re making, the terms on which the donation was made and more. It may be helpful to review the IRS’s standard deductions for the current year based on whether you are filing as:

  • single, or
  • head of household or
  • married couple filing a joint return.

We recommend our donors consult with a tax professional when determining tax advantages and limitations for any gift under consideration.

How do I prove charitable contributions on my tax return?

When filing your tax return, you will have to itemize your deductions to claim tax-deductible donations given to charity. It’s important to maintain accurate records of all documentation used to support your itemized deductions, such as a bank record, payroll deduction or written communication from St. Jude (or any qualifying nonprofit organization) containing the date and amount of contributions and a statement of whether goods or services were provided in exchange for the donation.

  • To deduct a noncash donation totaling more than $500, you will have to fill out Form 8283 and submit it with your return along with any other required information.
  • If your noncash charitable contributions total more than $5,000, you will also need to complete section B of this form. This also typically requires a verified appraisal.

If you plan to make gifts to one or more 501(c)(3) organizations over time, you can concentrate your charitable deductions into one year by establishing a donor-advised fund. The fund works like a savings account for a charity you give to regularly. Donations made to a donor-advised fund are generally entitled to an immediate charitable deduction, and it allows you to recommend grants to charities of your choice.
